What a vapor barrier does — and doesn't
A crawl space with a bare dirt floor is a moisture pump: soil releases water vapor into the air all year. A vapor barrier — a sheet of poly laid over the ground with the seams overlapped and taped — cuts that off. In a space that's otherwise dry, with good drainage outside and no standing water, that can be all you need, and it's cheap enough that many homeowners do it themselves. What it does not do is control humidity that comes in through open vents or from outside air, and it will not rescue a space that already has a moisture problem.
What full encapsulation adds
Encapsulation takes the barrier further: a thicker liner runs up the foundation walls and is sealed to them, the vents are closed, and a dehumidifier keeps the sealed space dry. Insulation and a drainage system are added when needed. The result is a conditioned space that holds a stable, low humidity — which is what actually stops mold and protects the framing. That's why it costs several times more than a barrier, and why it's the right answer only when there's a real moisture problem to solve.
How to tell which one you need
Go under the house, or look through the vents, after a wet stretch. A dry, odor-free space with intact insulation and no condensation on the framing may only need a barrier. Musty air in the rooms above, water droplets on ducts or the existing plastic, sagging insulation, cupping floors, or standing water all point to encapsulation — the barrier alone will not keep up.
